Zhong Chen left Zhongshan, China, in 1989 and arrived in Australia at the age of 19 to explore his love of painting. As a young man, Zhong Chen studied free brush mark painting. His work stylistically explores traditional Chinese folk art, wood block prints and ink brush painting.

Zhong Chen has exhibited throughout Australia and overseas. In 2008 he was a finalist in The Archibald and Wynne Prizes for the second year running, and also the Doug Moran Prize. His works are held in the collections of the Art Gallery of South Australia, BHP, Artbank, and in private collections in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Australia.

This exhibition showcases Zhong’s progression from his popular pixelated images. This new series of paintings substitutes his pixels with heavy-handed brush strokes and oil drippings contextualising his presence in contemporary Chinese art.
